Hello everyone, brand new member here, on the board but not at fishkeeping. I've been keeping fish for the past 5 years, and always had cichlids. the first 3 years I was into CA/SA but after realising that there was no way I could upgrade to a tank bigger than my 33G, I changed to Africans. Now that I'm a bit more stable financially, I've decided to try again with SA/CA cichlids so last weekend I went and bought a 90G. I would of liked a longer tank with less height but 48 inches was the longest I could fit in my car LOL.

So now I'D like to get some ideas for stocking that tiny tank. One fish that will be in the tank is a Jag. I've had 1 in the past and absolutely LOVED that fish. Will 90G be enough, probably not in the long run, but next year I will be moving in my house so a 125G will definately be bought for that 1 fish. The jag should be OK in the 90 for a year. But in the meen time, 1 2inch jag in a 90 will probably be RREEEEAALLLLYYYYYY boring so I'd like to know; what are your suggestions?

I thought about maybe a pair of convicts (never tried a pair!!!)..... and thats about all the ideas I have LOL

And for dithers I was thinking maybe 3-4-5 tinfoilbarbs (tiger barbs always got eaten IME) Any suggestions welcome here too.

As the fish get bigger I can always bring them back or stock in the 1 of my 1544398471080 other tank lol.....

Personally I am not a fan of Jags, same thing with Oscars, they just look too blend and ugly. If I had a 90 gallon I would go with nice sand substrate and a big driftwood center peace; 3-4 Geo's of sorts, cool pleco, and bunch of Silver Dollars.

If you buy a small Jag it will be perfectly fine in that for over a year.

I love Jags

You could do a Jag and two convicts. That way, by the time you move him into the 125, you wont have to find the convicts new homes, because they'll have been devoured by then.

Tinfoils are cool, but they get big and fast. And they need a lot of room to swim since they do best in groups. A 90 gallon would be ok for a while, but 3 large Tinfoils will need a larger tank in the long run, or you could just trade them in.
Thats if they make it that long with the Jag.

You can try anything you want with the baby Jag. Just make sure you dont get attached because the baby will turn into a nice predator in a few months.

Personally, I own two types of tanks-BREEDERS and SHOWCASES....I'm not into those community types anymore...It's either one breeding pair of something or a single showcase all to itself...But, if I had an empty 90g, the only "group" I would put together again is a rbp tank....This is the only type of "community" setup I plan on doing again...Good Luck

I completely understand what you're saying, I want this tank to be a showcase tank, it's just that before the jag hits 7-8 inches, it will look pretty boring. So thats why I was asking suggestions, until the jag takes some weight :headbang2

I think your Jag Idea is great, I absolutely love mine. Mine lives with all sorts of stuff, but he def. has his own territory. When they get large they are excellent show fish. I think other central/SA fish would be ok growing out with him, but in a 90 he may decide he wants the entire thing to himself. I got lucky and got a docile one, so maybe you will too :grinyes:

Welcome to MFK!

thankyou, I didn't remember tinfoil barbs got really big, my bad. I'll try to find something else...
