Quit the hobby last year and sold my 225 gallon sadly but was necessary at the time. I still am not able to have a large tank again yet until I move which will be sometime this year. For the moment I want to get back into the hobby at a smaller level for the time being. Found a good deal on a 33 gallon (36 x 18 x 12) tank yesterday so I will be picking it up a bit later today. Setting it up and starting the cycle.

Before I go pick up my tank i plan on heading to town to check out some of the pet/fish stores that I used to visit quite often but now feels like forever since I've been there. See what each of the stores is stocking now and of what sizes etc.

I plan to use pool filter sand as my substrate and use rocks / driftwood/ plants as the decorations to give it a natural look. For filtration I will be running both an AquaClear 70 and an Aqua-tech filter (not sure the details, comes with the tank and was previously used to filter the whole tank but I will be adding an AC70 for high filtration.

Now that all of that is out of the way I need help coming up with a stocking list for a 33 gallon. All ideas are welcome and I'm using both filters to give me a higher turnover so that I may be able to overstock a little. I'm open to any type of community tank (silver dollars, tiger barbs .. etc) I'm also a fan of bichir's (the Cuiver senegal bichir's) that are available at my pet store. Had two of them in my 225 but they never got a chance to grow before I had to get rid of the tank. I realize they would be too large full grown for the 33 gallon but I'm not too worried about that as upgrading is a deffinate as the moving process happens.

Shoot me your ideas .. open to a tank of one kind of fish or many. If it is one species i'd like something somewhat active and spreads through the tank. If more then one species or a community tank I'd like tank mates to fill top, middle and lower sections of the tank ..

Thanks in advance guys, feels good to be back!

Here's the stock of my tank (it's very similar dimensions to your tank) : 2 male pearl gouramis, 1 male guppy, 1 male mollie, 2 male German blue rams, 1 weather loach.

I'd recommend a couple of weather loaches (they're awesome fish), the GBR's are quite shy and the mollie is being a *** and harassing them a bit ;P

I might've helped, bye.

I checked out a few pets stores in town today and got my tank. Made a list of a few fish that caught my eye but I don't know alot about so would like some info on these fish with my tank:

Jaguar Cichlid
Jack Dempsy
Green Severums
Ast. Africans
Clown loaches (on sale)
silver dollars
pictus catfish
Tiger barbs (the tiger/albino and green)
Red tail Black Shark

Need some advice. I mentioned alot of cichlid's. thats not necesarily what I'm going for if at all Just those few caught my eyes cause I didn't see some of them often here.

That tank has a nice footprint as it is wide. I would do a fancy pleco L-114 comes to mind (my L-114 is awesome) and 5 silver dollars 2 redhooked and 3 regular. Then when you upgrade the redhooks will be very happy.

Almost all species listed on this thread will VERY quickly outgrow your tank. Tiger barbs, SOME African cichlids, and the RTBS would work (I would keep African separate if you decide to go that route).

Here is a thread I posted a while back on some species of "aggressive" CA cichlids that would work in smaller tanks.

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?415023-Let-s-Discuss-Some-CA-Cichlids-for-Smaller-Tanks&highlight=

If you're going for CA cichlids, you will need a game plan of what you want in the long run... Singles, pairs, group? There is no set rules for housing aggressive species of fish together, sometimes it will work and sometimes it won't, pairs can form and break and fish can kill each other.

Ok. Thought about this over night and each fish that I mention are currently 2" and tank will be upgraded in 6-8 months when my new house is built. So tank size aside what problems would I run into with a mixture of say:

3-5 silver dollars
2-3 clown loaches
1-2 red tail black shark

If this combination could work what else would be compatible for the next 6 months? Barbs? Other suggestions? Maybe some top dweller?
