U.K
I want to know more about what i can and can't stock together.
I am thinking of changing my 6x2x2 tank to saltwater and have always loved the following fish although i am sure there are fish on this list that could not live together (or could they?!)

  • Lion Fish
  • Puffer fish (more than one)
  • Trigger fish
  • Moray eel (or similar)
  • Starfish
Thats about it. I don't realy care about anything else. Could this list be kept together ?

I have had a lion, 2 puffers, and a trigger together with no issues. However, the lion died due to low PH I believe and he didn't eat. They are a pretty hard fish to take care of, so I would at least do some research about them first.

I've heard you cant mix eels and puffers very well. In general puffers tend to just bite things all the time and will more than likely end up biting the eel since they like to sit in one spot for long periods usually. This goes the same for the starfish, they definatly can't go with puffers.

Remember, A lot of agression is species dependant, so make sure you look into what you throw in your tank first :)

puffer/triggers and lion also aren't the best choice... sometimes people get lucky with them, sometimes they don't

Anyone else had experience of eels with puffers ?? I really like both and don't know what i would choose to keep if i had to decide between one or the other ?

I've never heard anything bad about eels and puffers, just puffers/triggerfish with a lionfish.

anything that's generanlly nippy may bite at the eel's tail

it's really hit or miss and depends on the fish involved...

So what can i go for ?
Puffer and Lion fish or puffer and trigger ?
I really would like two or three puffers and lion fish.

Very true, amazes me how some things work for people but not for others!

Your best bet is to do Triggers and Puffers together. The Lion fish will be nipped at because the other two fish and known to be nippers. I would also not recommend any eels if you get the trigger and puffer because to keep an eel you need a tank with a LOT of rock work to keep him happy and safe from other fish. I will break your list down for you and give you my suggestions.

Lion Fish - only do if you don't have any fish that will nip at his long fins (no triggers or puffers) Grows max 15 inches

Puffer fish (more than one) - Different one's here act differently and grow to different sizes. It's recommended that you look around and decide what one's you want then ask the question if you can have them. But be reminded that puffers can and do fight with each other.

Trigger fish - This is the same as puffers and recommend the same as what i put for them. But also in the trigger fish family you have some of the most nasty and aggressive fish that are available. Make sure you ask before you buy. Because if you buy one that's nice but u know nothing about it may be the only fish in you tank after a short period of time.

Moray eel (or similar) - When people say moray eel that usualy means there talking about the green moray eel. If i am right then here is a extremely aggressive fish. I would not recommend this fish to any noob or seasoned aquatous. FOR EXPERTS ONLY. Also most people fail to relize how big this fish can get over 8FT long

Starfish - Here is something else that is only recommend for EXPERTS ONLY. Even the experts have prob's keeping these alive in there tank. Most need to be fed live clams in the shell which is not rederly advaiable to most people. The water also have to be Perfect like a reef tank and that will not be able to be done in a tank that has messy eating preds in it.

I hope this was helpfull to you. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
