A few days ago I purchased a 1 inch Buttikoferi and 3 tetras that I am using as target fish from a LFS. The Butti has been in this tank for at least 3 days now but is acting very funny. He/she stays in the top back right hand corner behind the heater the entire day. He/she eats when something comes close to it but that is it. This concerned me because I am use to very active cichlids. I do understand that it can take some time for fish to get use to the tank.

So, last night my wife calls me to give me a status report on the fish tank. I was very upset to hear that the fish is still sitting in the corner not moving basically looks dead! I told my wife that when I get home I want to go get some new fish. I figured if the little butti dies I will still have some fish in the tank.

So, I go to the LFS and I see they have some baby Flowerhorns, baby Red Devils/Midas and some baby Purple Rose Queens. I was kind of happy to see more than just tetras and mollies. So, I purchased 1 of each about 1 to 1 ½ inches in size. Despite my better judgment and years of keeping cichlids, I knew I should not be buying these fish because of the shear aggression but I bought them anyway. I tried making myself feel better about the purchase by telling myself “if anyone of these fish gets beat-up, or is getting harassed I will just bring them back before s%^% hits the fan”.

I get home place the fish in the tank and what do you know!!!!!! The darn Butti is active as all #%$&. He/she has not gone behind the heater and is acting friendly by coming to the glass and actively looking for food. Now, I am very upset that I just bought 3 very aggressive fish. I just wanted a Butti in the tank by its self and hope that he/she would have made a nice wet pet.

I really don’t know what I am going to do because I have kept all of these fish in the past and loved their personalities. There is a struggle for power for a clay pot between the Purple Rose Queen and the Red Devil/ Midas. The Midas took over the pot last night but when I woke up the purple Rose Queen had control over it. The flowerhorn gets chased by the devil/midas but kepts to its self. My darn Butti is just chillen in a log just acting like a butti.

I really don’t know what to do guys? I know if I do not make a move soon, dead bodies will be floating.Oh, the tank is 75 gallons. It was just meant for one fish. Even now I want to just keep one fish but now sure which one.

Just take back theRed Devil/ Midas, Buttikoferi and keep the Purple Rose Queen....

I was think the same thing. I am diffinatly bring back the flowerhorn and the Buttikoferi. The RD/Midas is really nice just can't take a chance with that fish in this tank.

You already know what you need to do take the others back ,now that the butti has settled in.

The problem is keeping the Butti like that. I would not want to find out after I brought the fish back that the Butti reverted back to its old behavior. I rather keep one of the more active fish and then get another tank with the Butti in the future.

"Patience, my young padawan"

I really want to do that but I feel really bad knowing that the one on top beat the hell out of the other four fish to get there. I had no intentions to get this many fish. Do you think at that size it will be complete war or do I have some time?

It took almost a month after qt for my Freddy to start acting "normal". If You really want the Butti, take back the other fish. Patience........

I kept a small group of cichlids in a 90 gallon for a few months till my 300 was built. Aggression was what it was once they reached 3-4".......typical cichlid behavior in such close quarters.......at some point, i think you'll have to remove some if not all other than the dominant fish....
