I did some searching on here to no avail about stocking levels on malawi cichlids.
I currently have 2 albino peacocks in the mix with some green terrors, and I fear the time is coming for separation.
I'm concidering moving some fish around, possibly freeing up a 20gal.
Depending on how much I can stock I may concider buying a 55gal.

How much can I stock in a 20gal? I'm planning on going with really vibrant ones.

I'm afraid they will probably outgrow a 20 gal in a matter of 6 months to a year tops so if you are planning on upgrading within the year I woulod say you might be able to get away with 5-10 depending on their size and then upgrade to no less than a 55 if they are peacocks, 75 for mbunas, and at least 90 if your gonna have haps or larger peacocks or mbuna...

so 5-10 are common in a 55 i understand?

once you moved them to a 55 are you planning to have any breed? you could use the 20 to grow some fry out and then add them to the 55 or if you are planning to do an all male tank, you could get some more until you max out at about 15-20 for a 55 gal I would say depending onj size of them... most peacocks only get about 5 in but some get bigger if they get over 5 inch I'd recommend a bigger tank!!

i'd be lookin at 5 inchers more than likely, if anything was to breed I would use for feeder or sell at 1in, if said actions happen i can find a way to accomodate them, but the purpose of the tank would be purely for veiwing.
I would like to use 20gal if possible. The albinos are already about 5in. Does this mean I can get 10 in the 20gal or am i way off with that assumption?

well 10 males I'd say probably not... mabye 5... but I'd say ask around bc I only have used a 20 for growing out not for full grown...

20 is too small for any of the plans. Upgrade tank, or go with some dwarf CA/SA or shellies. Peacocks are to big for this tank. Most Africans are too aggressive for this size tank.

What's habitable? a 55?

BTW I read all your posts with a seth rogan voice.
