Stocking My 20 Gallon

Well right now i have a 20 gallon tank that has about a 3 inch Jack Dempsey...i was sold it at a PetSmart (when it was about 1 and a half inches) where they told me it would do well in a 20 gallon tank...now after some research i find out that it needs at least a 55 gallon tank so i am going to have to give it to a friend who has a 300 gallon tank with assorted South American cichlids. Now i would love to keep this fish and upgrade but i am currently in college and have little money to buy a new tank...so i am forced to part with my fish....so what would you guys recommend, i would like something that is cool to watch and aggressive ( if there is anything that will fit in a 20 gallon) if there is not what do you guys think i should stock it with

id do a single convict, a pair would not work for long or neither would a pair of firemouths
 
is the tank a standard 20 or a 20 long? I'd go with something like a pair/group of Neolamprologus multifasciatus.
