hello all,

Thinking of switching my 90g tank over to cichlid's from a community setup. I am thinking of a green terror for sure and wondering what else to put in there. I have read that you might need something else in there to "challenge his manhood" to get a nice hump going, so maybe something he can dominate when he grows up like a Convict?

Also what kind of dither for this tank other than SD's since I have them in with and oscar already.

Thanks

You can try some rainbowfish or giant danios for dithers

As far as a fish to "challenge his manhood", any med-large new world cichlid with a fiesty attitude will do.

Giant Danios, Convicts, Honduran Red Points would work for what you are looking for. I would be careful about what other medium sized cichlid that you decide to place with the GT. While individual personalities are important, GT can be aggressive but they are not usually high on the aggression scale compared to others. You don't want to add the wrong cichlid to encourage the GT's Nuchal Hump to grow, only to have it hounded by its more aggressive tankmate. If that happens your GT will take the submissive role and his Nuchal Hump will not grow quite as large. The size of a Nuchal Hump can be decided by dominance, genetics, diet, age and water parameters. I have seen cichlids with very large NH without any other large cichlid sharing the tank with them. You may not need another cichlid of the same size for your GT to display a large NH. Find one with a good lineage from a reputable vendor. Best of luck with what ever you decide. It sounds like you will have a nice tank.

with that size tank your probably not gonna get to challenge his man hood with another equally sized fish. i would go for firemouths, conivcts, salvini, rainbow, jewel, t-bar.

If you wanted to have a pair of these smaller cichlids, it would be doable, but they actually might dominate your GT when they pair up. When they're working together, they make a pretty formidable force which can dominate fish much larger than they are. Therefore, I'd wait till your GT's big.

I'd also suggest many Polypterus species for a tankmate for your GT. They usually get along fine or completely ignore each other. (and they have great personalities)

Very good advice. Some smaller cichlids such as Convicts can be absolute beasts during breeding. You'll have less problems with same-sex combos.

Thanks for the quick replies, and suggestions. I will have to look up some of these guys. I have heard of smaller cichlids bullying GT's until they finally grow bigger than them so should I put the GT in there first so he can set up shop or just put him and whatever else I pick at the same time?

Danios look like they might work. Anyone know how fast they grow. Same question - put these guys in there first? or at same time?

i had a pretty big green terror not too long ago, he was amazing looking, his fins grew out realll long, i had him in my 125 with just my tiger oscar and a my jack dempsey. this was about 4 months ago, and at that time the terror was the biggest, and dominant fish in the tank until my oscar outgrew and slayed him:(.. however i think that a jd is a good fish to "compete" with a green terror, my terror and JD had what i believed to be a mutual respect for each other haha

I have a JD in with my GT and they get along well enough, but if there is ever a confrontation, the GT clearly takes on the dominant role.

Granted these are both juvenile fish at only about 3" a piece but just thought I'd throw it out there.

Well now I can't decide between a GT and a JD, or a breeding pair of terrors by themselves. Haven't really had breeders before except angels but they were in a community setup and never had any fry make it. Seems that the breeding pair would be the best way to see behaviours/colors

Opinions?
