HI. I have a 120 running on a FX5 with 2 large sponge filters inside. My stock is as follows:

5 Modesta Botias (5-8")
2 skunk loaches (2.5")
1 grey mystery botia (6")
4 silver dollars (4-5")
3 blood parrots (5")
1 ordinary pleco (10")

I'm trying to figure out if I'm way over-stocked, or if I'm overfeeding. The filter (only a month old) needed cleaned after a month. I've been doing 40% water changes weekly, which is fine. If I wait any longer, the nitrates go up dramatically. Fish seem fine. I've been thinking about changing over to sand this summer, as the gravel I have is pretty coarse and I think the loaches would love sand. I also would like to get rid of the pleco, as soon as I can find it a home... it doesn't do anything productive in the tank anymore, just poop. With this stock, should I be able to maintain the tank in a very healthy condition with the regular weekly water changes, if I'm not over-feeding? Just would like some opinions. Thanks in advance!

id say get rid of the pleco and you'll be fine

I want to get rid of the pleco, but want to find it a home, I guess. Feel sorta sorry for plecos. Everyone buys them and then no one wants them when they are large. I've had this one for 3 years, but won't ever buy another one... bristle noses for me now. I bet lots of ordinary plecos live miserable abused lives. We have a big 8' wide horse tank at the farm which is heated year-round and contains ordinary gold fish that have been thriving in there for decades. Would my pleco be healthy in that sort of situation?

You have a wonderful tank with wonderful fish and you are NOT over filtering, as there is no such thing.

I agree about getting rid of the pleco.

I would NEVER add a pleco to a goldfish set up, as the goldfishes slime and fins and in turn scales will be on the menu! don't do it.

Replace the pleco with a bushynose and you'll be fine. Bring it to a pet shop.
