is a 75g (4ft foot print) big enough to house a solo female Festae and what dithers could i have with her? also whereabouts i England can i get one (would have to be by post), i have seen that Trimar have them for £38.50 for large specimens but they are collection only.

A75 would work well for a single female, or even a pair for a while.

Your dithers would have to be large enough not to be eaten, but also no intimidating enough to cause a territorial threat.
I have used a school of young Tilapia to good effect, and eat them when they get too big.

It might be worth a look at Wildwoods, they deliver and their service was great when I last used them.
Also keep an eye out on Aquarists classifieds, maybe even placing a 'wanted' advert.
I think Craigslist has some UK adverts in if I remember correctly.
Oddball express (Ross Evans) is another one, none in just now but keep an eye out for his new stock lists at EA Cichlids. Very nice guy but his delivery is a bit steep (£24 I think for my last order of 1 box comprising of 4 fish) when compared to almost every other online retailer but he also stocks far more exotic species than most places.

Hi, i believe you would be fine with a female festae, and IMO you could use almost anything as dithers whilst she is small. However, avoid fin nippers untill she gains some size - because despite being terrors when large they can often be more sensitive when small. Once she gets large you may be better with larger barbs, and eventually even SD's may be best.

If you search discountfish.co.uk and contact them they have festaes coming in every other week. I currently have 4 on hold for me.

And the festaes are only £5, and £20 delivery. They are about 1" so you could grow a few out to ensure you get a female. Plus thats half the fun watching then grow.

Ah thanks for the info.

Heres a few questions...

1/How big do female Festaes actually get?

2/Could she share my 75g with my beloved female pink convict that i have had for years? (she is gentle and currently sharing the tank with Severums, Tiger Barbs, RTBS, Auerus, HRP)

3/Do they do ok being fed on just Hikari gold?

4/Do they always have that striking red, black, orange colouration , or just when breeding

5/Could i use my breeding colony of Yellow Labs as dithers? (yes i know the parameters should be different)

6/Could the Tiger Barbs i have currently be used as dithers?

7/If not to the two questions above, how many Silver Dollars would it be fair to cram into my 4ft tank with her? (i am fond of SD's)

8/For Decor, i currently have fine black gravel and a dark stoney background, will this bring out her colours the best or are they like flowerhorns that need broght blue and white sand?

Thanks :)

Female festaes tend to max out around 10-12" but can get larger. I would say she would be okay with your pink con. Just make sure you have a back up plan incase she gets a bit aggressive. It obviously depends on the fish in terms of aggression, just watch the pink con doesn't beat on her when she is small. The sevs, rtbs etc will have to go as you will know. The tiger barbs will be okay as dithers, just make sure they do not try and nip her fins. Hikari pellets will be fine, but for extra colour feed her a mixed diet of bloodworms, earthworms, veggies etc. I wouldn't recommend the labs as dithers, as they have the potential to do damage, especially when breeding and in numbers. I would stick with the barbs. They tend to get and keep the deep red colouration from about 4-6" onwards. However, they do become even redder when breeding. I personally wouldn't go with anymore than 3 SD's if you were to choose those. The black gravel and background may work in your favour, highlighting the vertical bars on her flanks. However, it is always good to play around and see what you prefer. Hope this helps, anymore question?

You could get a pair in a 75 gallon.

Really? even tho its only 4ft? wouldnt it stunt the males growth?

If so i might buy 5 and let them pair off naturally.

Heres another question, how long will the take to get some size if i buy them at 1" each?

They will probably gain a significant amount of size in the first few months. Probably hitting 5" within the first 6months, if you provide them with good water and plenty of food. Then slowing down to probably an inch every 3 months. I personally wouldnt recommend a breeding pair in a 75 permenantly. The males can reach 18". Which doesn't give much space for swimming. A young pair would be fine though. The small space may cause a lot of aggro when they get bigger, so careful the males dont kill the females.
