Hi there im new to keeping african cichlids. My question is a buddy of mine gave me all his african cichlids about a month ago and not to smonure if theres to many in my tank. Its a 90 gallon and the fish I got are 2 vetnus 2 kenyi 2 yellow labs 2 jewel cichlids 2 red by reds and one deamansoni not sure on all the spelling lol. Always, kept south americans not africans so any advice would help me out a lot. Thanks.

With an african tank its probly better to overstock so they have more people to pick on lol. But u should be fine jus make aure there are a lot of caves and hiding spots n what not

I agree, you could even add a little more cichlids if you wanted to

Yeah, most of what you have are mbuna (which max out around 5", but some are bigger and smaller). The venestus (assuming from your spelling) will get much larger.

With mbuna you definitely want to overstock (very few exceptions), and could have upwards of 50 fish depending on species (and male:female ratio), decor, filtration, and maintenance schedule. That would make for a very, very busy tank but the fish would survive and, assuming you do the maintenance and have decent filtration, would even thrive. The overstocking helps to spread out the aggression and the M:F ratio keeps specific females from continually getting picked on.

With haps, the number greatly decreases due to size and temperament. Can't really give a set number because some haps can grow to be way over 10", while others max at around 6-8".

Just have an aqua clear 110 on the tank for filtration for now going to put a rena xp3 in as well. Curious to know how to sex african cichlids im very new to them so its a big learning curve for me. And i do the regular maintenance. What other mbuna would be good to add?
