Hi guys, this is my first thread on the forum.
In a couple of months I'll get a 100 gallon/375 litres tank. The dimensions will be 150x50x50 cms or 59x20x20 inches.
The problem is that I still don't know which species of cichlid to keep.
In the beginning I thought of an Oscar and a couple of smaller fishes or maybe 2 Oscars but I'm not sure about it. I'd like a big cichlid like minimum 10 inches if possible and if that means I have to keep only this big guy in the tank I'm ok with that.
So what would you stock it with?
Thanks everybody.

You might be able to get away with one Oscar. They grow fast and huge but if you keep up on water quality it might work out. How is your tap water?

You could keep one Oscar in there no problem. There are tankmates you could add as well. In my experience a Jack Dempsey works nicely as a buddy for an O. A firemouth would probably work as well... maybe not all three (though that might work too)

Hi my tap water has a pretty high pH at about 7.5.
Regarding the hardness my water company uses French degrees so I'll have to measure it with the testers. But I'll eventually use some RO water if I'll need it.

7.5 is fine for an Oscar. They tolerate pretty hard water as well, they are so domesticated at this point that they are quite adaptable as long as acclimated correctly.

Ok I've to say that a combination of an Oscar and a jd is really cool.
I know that Oscars grow like really fast, maybe it's better to introduce the jd and after a couple of months the Oscar so that it doesn't become too big too early?

That is probably a really bad idea depending on the aggression level of you oscar because in those few months that you have him he will start to think that everything inside and outside of the tank is his. I would also say try to do either just one oscar or one oscar and three jacks. That will help keep aggression down.

Oscar and three jacks would be overkill, Honestly Oscars are not that aggressive in general to have to worry about him claiming the tank. And with only 3 jacks, the smallest one would "probably" be getting picked on. I would stick to Oscar and one jack. Maybe a firemouth. With cichlids, within reason it is trial and error, but I think you have a good chance of O and JD working out, maybe with a few giant danios or something similar as well.

The only reason I say that is because i has that happen and my oscar would not stop trying to kill everything until I had four fish with it. I am only talking out of experience

Thanks guys, after a bit of researching around the net I thought of another option.
The other option I thought is a planted tank with a male gt and maybe a group of schooling fish or some bottom dwellers.
In this case what could get along with the gt without getting harmed?
