Has anyone ever caught a fish and kept it alive for thier saltwater tanks? Curious because today I went fishing and caught these strange looking fish. They were about 4 inches, and look cool. I threw them back because I didn't have an aireator. Well I did take home a starfish that was eating bait on my hook, didn't get snagged it is very small like a quarter. As I type this he is currently going under the drip system to go into my 20 gallon quarantine tank. I'm curious on how he will do.

Btw I asked this because many people do that with freshwater....

New york probably has cold water fishes...thats the only real problem I can see. They wont like the tropical water temps that your other fish do. Otherwise yes. Know a lot of people in FL that ONLY get their fish that way. But they use a slurp gun, not R&R.

A slurp gun? Also so far the starfish is doing god so far hope he pulls through....also some species of fish here like stripe live in tropical water's at times, but an 800 gallon tank would be needed for those giants!

Google slurp gun. Actually bing it, I dont want google taking over the world.

Starfish can be tricksy...but Ill keep positive for ya. :D

Yea, lionfish have been found as far north now as new york I think now too during the summer. Snagging one of those would be a great deal.

Just remember that its a bad idea to bring fish into captivity and then release them back into the wild, so either send them to the "Youth in Asia" (euthanasia) program or give them to a LFS.

i wish i had marine fish catchable near me. i would go diving and net myself some of the cooler fish for free

It is a cool experience. Biggest LFS in the world is the ocean. You get to pick size, coloration...everything ha. Its a good way to get specimens that are "perfect" for you. On the other hand, its a practice that is easily abused, and these fish are more likely to die than the captive raised ones, or the ones that have already been through QT in three different warehouses before coming to the LFS.

Hey guys, the star fish looked like he was doing so well, after i realize the ocean temp was at 68 degrees and y quarentine is at 83 LMFAO! So i brought him back to the ocean to the spot where I found him and hoped for the best..... (I had his original water left over to drip him). I'm about to search this slurp gun now

I have kept hundreds of organisms from fresh and salt water in Florida. They withstand higher temperatures much better.

Two things:

1) It's usually illegal to keep wild animals without a permit (seagrasses are even more strict)

2) At least in Florida, it's illegal to return any organisms that was kept in the same water as store-bought individuals. It is also illegal to return them after 30 days of quarantine in captivity.

So don't get caught. Also, I hear slurp guns are overrated, and a net can do much more.
