Here's a pic of the two large stonecats I caught last night. Going back out there tonight to see if I can't get a record. The montana state record is 10" and I caught one at 9 1/2". Can't wait to get back out there. On another note these are much darker than the ones I caught last year. Just thought I would share! enjoy the pics!

Those are cool little cats!

I caught them on the sun river in great falls montana, about 5 miles from my house lol. I used night crawlers at 2 a.m. Fished shallow slow water on the river and there they were. also caught a black bullhead today that I will post pics of. Going back out fishing in a bit. These cats don't fight hard, but they are gorgeous so worth it. Hoping that there is a record cat in there somewhere. The ones I catch are all close to the record size. If you are ever comming down this way let me know, I'll show you where to find them. Usually catch a bunch of them every night if you fish the banks to about 20 ft out in the river.

Its color is very yellow. I find adult black bullheads to be much more yellow in color than yellow bullheads. This is in my opinion a black bullhead. The chin barbels show way too much pigmentation for a yellow. The chin barbels in a yellow, are almost white.

all the fish in that river are colored really wierd. The water is so muddy you can't see the fish until they are out of it lol. Look at the stonecats. They are way darker than normal. usually they are a greyish color. Trust me. Different subspecies up here in montana. The fish is really dark, but the flash shines yellow. She's a real beauty. As skijack stated the chin barbells give it away. I find that the yellow bullheads are usually not as thick bodied either, and have a more even color throughout. Color based names can be confusing, when fish can be any color. You have to use defining characteristics to identify species positively. Caught a few more today, nothing to brag about, just a couple really small blacks, and stone cats. Going to work so we'll see what I can do next week.
