So I just bought some fake plants from the store, I thought they were all silk but only 1 I bought was all silk. The others have a some wire in them, are these safe. I see people saying they use store bought plants from stores such as michaels, etc, are they only the silk ones? Anyone have any actually experience, anyone can make assumptions, I would like to hear from those who have done it and if they've ran into any problems.

I have some in with my grass cutter catfish, flowerhorn, red devil, pike cichlid, and jack dempseys and they all seem to be doing fine. They were bought at michaels. Some of the silk ones at aquarium shops have metal in them as well.

Thanks for the quick reply, I used to always hear that it was a major no-no but recently I've been seeing a lot of people doing it with no problems.

i wondered about it also, that metal wire inside must be cheap.i tried some in my tank, with no visible signs of breakdown, the fish seem healthy

They were selling some fake plants at one of the LFS recently that were simply the stuff from Micheals with gravel siliconed together to form a base.

I was thinking about making some before I got into the whole planted tanks thing (the intervention is soon by the way lol). I had thought that if you take a dixie cup and punch a hole in the bottom then you could feed the ends of the petioles/stems through that hole. Then fill the cup with the gravel you want add silicone and prop it up so the cup doesnt spill you could make them easily. :)

I've been using silk plants bought from Michael's since August with no ill effects. I use plastic plants bought from them too. Comes out to be MUCH cheaper than if bought at the LFS.

Yea, Ive been thinking about getting a bag of river rocks from home depot and siliconing them to the bottom, I have enough sand right now to get them down anyways but my jag likes to move the sand
