Keep in mind that fishes sold in the stores are not necessarily tropical - I've seen anything from A to Z sold in stores - which is why I asked which ones may be more appropriate. I have no problem putting a heater on as needed.
As for pollution - yes, absolutely - all over the world, including reefs, sadly - which is true for most of our freshwater, too. Think about what we are drinking, for instance.
