Is slate used for flooring purposes safe for aquariums? I usually get slate from fish shops as the local landscaping places dont have what i'm looking for.
example:
6" x 6" Slate Gray Ceramic Tile

I just want to make sure before i go out and buy some...

You can buy tiles made from slate, not ceramic that looks like slate. I used a 12"x12" to secure some driftwood to in my discus tank.

I buy slate from a local garden store all the time with no problems. Just boil and clean it very well. At .14 per pound you cant beat it.

agreed just make sure they didn't use any kind of chemicals or anything for shine if u get the precut flooring tiles. if you just ask the people working there they are usually pretty knowledgable. gl

I'm gonna stop in tommorow...all i can find on the website is ceramic and granite made to look like slate.

what did u come up with. curious i've never gone this route before and wondering what's available. i have a friend that works at a local awesome stoneyard that hooks me up with whatever i need but never thought of the flooring materials. gl

The best i could find was either (estimates) 5x5" for $.96 and 12x12 for $2.24 each. They are just square slate tiles...with one side grooved and machined for flooring purposes. I think they would be good for purposes involving slate stacks or random pieces for stability or whatever. I wouldnt exactly fill a tank with them, i'm gonna keep looking. PLUS i'm not sure if any chemicals are used in the machining process.

The best I've found to use...if you can find some is roofing slate. It has a rougher texture and looks more natural in an aquarium.

cool idea. just something to keep in mind later when i'm looking for some off the wall diy materials.lol
