today I have to take apart my current and only filter to fix it becuase I cracked it. The silicone I'm useing needs 24 hours to cure. I don't want my benificial bacteria to die off. Will the bacteria survive if i were to put the bio media in a bucket of tank water for 24 hours. Will it survive? Or what can i do while silcone is cureing ?

if you could get some pure amonia add some to the bucket and add an airstone for water movement but you might still have a mini cycle

Just keep it damp. You can put it in a plastic bag with air in it the same way you would transport fish. DONT ADD ANY AMMONIA! You dont need to encourage a 'mini' or a 'motor' or any other kind of 'cycle" in your media. It will be fine for a few days no problem

i mean add amonia up to
about 20 ppm just to keep the bb going because if it just sits in water for a few days i am sure your will get a small die off hence the mini cycle

ya i agree just dump it in your tank until you need it again

I would put the biomedia in a mess bag or pantyhose and place it into your tank, in water flow if possible. Does your tank have any filtration while your fixing your filter?

BTW silicone will not bond to plastic, so down the road your repair is likely to start leaking.

Put the biomedia in a mesh bag and hang in front of your other filter, that will keep it cycled and actually do something for your tank at the same time.

I think you need to do a test to see if the glue you are using will actually stick to the filter plastic. You may need to experiment with different glues. If the Silicone doesn't work work try a 2 part epoxy like Araldite. That also has a cure time, but is also non-toxic once cured. I'm not sure what plastic your filter is though so I'm not sure what will work.

Cheers
