I just got a delivery of several bags of flake and pellet from Kens Fish. Holy cow, that's a lot of food! I've got a 5 gal. community tank for gods sake.

What's the best way to store the food? Freeze it or put it in a cool, dark place?

Does this stuff expire? This supply is going to last me quite a while (although at Ken's prices, there's no harm in dumping and re-ordering).

Thanks!

Ask Kensfish for expiration date although most packages should have it. I keep them in cool dark place. If you cannot use all within four months, you can always sell or give them away to other members who can use them.

I'll ask Kens. There's no expiration date on any of the food (or any of my old cans of tetramin, dried worms, etc. for that matter).

No way I go through all of this in 4 months. 4 years is more realistic - seriously. I'd be glad to give it away, but the shipping costs more than the food.

Guess I've got no choice but to setup more tanks. Oh well.

One can never have too many tanks.:D I have four just for snails.:headbang2

I overbought from Ken's once, so I e-mailed him and asked what to do with the extra. His advise was, as long as the bags aren't opened, to put them in the freezer in a brown paper bag to block the light getting to them when the freezer is opened. He said it would stay good for over a year like that. I ended up selling the extra to somebody else so I didn't have to do that but I assume he knows what he's talking about.

Vacuum bag it and freeze it

I've been looking for a reason to justify purchasing a $149 vaccuum sealer for a while, but I don't think saving a $3.50 bag of fish food is gonna do it.

I'll use what I can for the next six months, keeping the bulk in a ziplock in the basment cabinet and then splurge on a new bag this summer.
