I noticed my Jag acting a bit strange this morning and hope that everything is OK. Can you guys take a look at this video and tell me what you think. He is jerking his head downward every 5-10 seconds, almost like an involuntary spasm.

My fish do this when breeding and trying to be dominant when a new fish is added or another fish is trying to compete.

That looks a little different he looks weak and doing the movement. Normally my fish would jerk but gill flaring at times as well.

Not sure what it is but doing a water change can help.

I did a 50% WC two days ago. In the pic the Nitrates look kinda high but IRL they are reading between 5-10ppm.

The behavior is normal, they are an aggressive fish, we just get the bi-polar end of it - finding out if ours are chill and make good community fish or turn into savage psychopaths

IIRC, 2.5ppm is what the nitrate reading SHOULD be, but I think a lot of people have it at 5ppm, but 10ppm is a little higher than you want it. I would do water changes to get it down, and add a few more doses or Natural Bacteria......high nitrates generally means there aren't enough Natural Bacteria to eliminate it......or too many fish, but in your case, 3 fish wouldn't cause that, especially at merely a few inches.
Also, have you tested your TAP WATER directly for nitrates before it goes in the tank? Ours comes out w/ about 5ppm of nitrates, so it's great for speed-cycling my tanks, but you need to know beforehand so you're seeing all variables in the equation. In which case it's caused by NOTHING you are doing or aren't doing.

If this is the case, the only sure way is to fill a few buckets with R/O at your LFS, or buy a ****-load of bottled water from the grocery store

....unless you know somebody with Well-water, like I do :D

its his way of saying ,

I'm on a well ;))....
typo - I meant to say "a few more doses OF Natural Bacteria...."

How long has the tank been running, btw?

You can still test the water from the Tap anyway, always better safe than sorry, but it should be 0ppm for everything, however some wells can house Troglodytes, so in that case any variable is possible

Troglodytes, seriously? The well water is good to go I have tested it and I have a company come out every three months and check my system to ensure its running up to sunff. They also do water testing to include heavy metals, parasites, PH and hardness.

The tank has been cycled for about a month now.

Turn off the light above the aquarium, and just leave the room light on. If he quits doing that, he's more likely displaying to his reflection.
