could polypterus senegalus (sengals) be housed with labidochromis caeruleus (electric yellow cichlid) ?

i realize the water params are a tad different, but they do have a medium from what i see...

Sengal
Tank Conditions: 77-80°F; pH 6.5-7.5; KH 8-12
Electric Yellow
Tank Conditions: 72-82°F; pH 7.2-8.5; KH 10-15

just looking for a little more color w/o adding any huge fish

opinions please?

idk, risky. i think its a bad idea for the reasons below.

possible problems i forsee.
1. the yellow labs getting alot of food.
2. because of the diferences in diet the yellow labs getting bloat and dying, eating to much meaty foods that the bichirs need, and the yellow labs dont.
3. the labs nipping at the bichirs, or the bichirs swalling the labs.

of course, there are many other issues here that i havent thought of, because i just woke up, but; basically because of #2 i dont think it would work

In theory i should be fine however avoid breeding pairs-Anne

in "theory" huh?
so.... do it, just not a breeding pair? i dont want a breeding pair anyways

electric yellows dont breed in pairs anyways, at least not ussually. they would if it was just a male and female. but they are better kept in groups of 6 or so, imo. sure they would probly work, but the labs would likely eat alot of high protien food and get bloat and die.

i have my birchir with my africans hes doing fine...i just feed 2 diffrent diets...so...but my labs are like 2 inches my birch is like 6

Heres my standard response to the will they get along question
When asked "will they get along ?" Sometimes the answer is as simple as yes or no, The truth is we speak in generalities some fish in theory should be ok together some not.The long broad sweeping statements are flawed as they are generalities I think we all know generalities are just opinions , but because we are dealing with animals each with its own personality its flawed. This question is harder with predatory fish, due to their natural habits ,predation! where they naturaly feed on the smaller , the weaker and the sick, claim territory and defend it . The actual answer is we don't know it's our best guess that they should or shouldn't get along.I know one of my bichirs is highly agressive which is completely different from what i have been told, so he's in his own tank , my others all conspecifics seem fine together which is oppisite from what i have read and been told. Its a case of trial and error to some extent and depends on the individual animal. When introducing a new animal into the territory of an established animal try rearanging the tank it tends to remove reference points for territoriality but most important watch for trouble and stop it before it goes to far.-Anne

good standard response! but i didnt ask if they would get along ;) i know the answer to that. in line with your post, back when i first got into the hobby i had a Colombian Shark housed with Neon Tetras :screwy: yes, not to brilliant, but internet wasnt exactly a household thing either, and you would "think" LFS employees know what there talking about
anyways, i never lost a neon in that tank. so i know each will fish acts differently

my concern is more over the water params which i think will be fine. i just wanted a 2nd opinion
