strange green sunfish behavior

I have a 5 inch green sunfish in a newly setup 55 gallon tank. Right now hes in there by himself. He was swimming around and then all of a sudden he pointed his tail to the sand and did this weird shimmy thing and blew sand everywhere with his tail. when i looked at the sand there was a small crater. what is he doing?

sounds kinda like he is trying to itch himself., does he rub himself again the sand??

No he just stirs the sand around and swims away. He doesn't even touch the sand

It almost sounds like it's trying to make a nest.

The sunfish in my pond make these little craters for nests that they then lay their eggs in and guard their young after they hatch.

i was lucky enough to observe some spotted sunfish I had make a nest, and that was how they did it.

Definately making a nest. Maybe you can find him a female and let them mate?

I am no expert, but yeah it sounds like he is making a nest...too bad you don't have a mate for him.
