strange : heater / magnet problem

we recently had a customer
who had 2 marineland stealth heaters in a 90 gallon tank...
the heaters were working inconsistently....
he had a Mag float algae cleaner
attached to the glass...
he removed the magnet cleaner,
then the heaters started working properly again

since glass is nonmagnetic... he either failed to mention the he was keeping the magnet next to the heater or he made the whole thing up
