This is the second morning in a row this has happened, yesterday I didn't really notice as I was in a hurry to go to work and couldn't watch them...
I've got a 160g with a big ornate bichir, green aro, a pair of uaru (female is around 9-10" male is about 8") and three A. heckelii around 4-5". I've recently started feeding Hikari sinking cichlid gold as I found the floating stuff goes over the overflow too quickly, every morning I usually chuck in a handful to distract the cichlids while I feed the aro his more expensive arowana sticks. The sinking cichlid gold sinks pretty quick and they usually pick it up off the ground, except for the female uaru who knows the arowana sticks taste better and so she lingers around the surface.
Now the weird part. The last two mornings I've done this, the male uaru will swim straight down to where the pellets are, and start defending them from the heckeliis but with out actually eating any! He chases them away, and flicks his pelvic fins forward while doing it. He did it for at least a minute while I fed the aro, then for another minute or so while I fed the delhezis in the other tank I have in the garage. I'm not sure what happens after that, I'll try to feed them earlier so I can watch for longer tomorrow, but my theory is that he protects them until the female comes down to start eating.
Anyone else ever experienced weird behaviour like this?
