I have a "greenwater" tank started with water I collected at one of the local fishing holes. Was a very bright green floating algae that tended to be attracted to itself but would never form dense clumps. I liked how it looked over my other internet bought starter culture as it was obviously a floating algae so would be easy to keep in suspension (or so I thought)...

I worry about the inhabitants of the greenwater tank. I have a "mud puppy" and 2 guppies in this tank that has gone from crystal clear to a somewhat dense green color in just a week. The green does not worry me but there is this white smoky looking stuff in the tank. It does not mix with the green water it stays seperate from the water (tends to stick together but not with a strong bond).

Here is a video of the "fog"...

looks like something from poltergeist

I can't get the vid to run at the moment..(My problem not yours...) However I have to wonder about the lighting your providing for the tank. (it sounds great by the way.) The lighting changes might well be affecting the algae and that could be causing the white 'fog'.

what made you use lake water vs. regular tap?

The majority of the water is purified water I just poured a bit of the green algae into the tank. Started out crystal clear and in 1 week its as you see it in the vid.
