So this has to be my strangest looking filter yet... I got the idea from looking at a DIY 55 gallon drum filter for a pond. I realized that I would never need a sump that big for the tank I was planning on filtering (40 gallon) so I devised this miniature design. Tell me what you think.

Now from what I read the 3/4" to 1"(red), 3/8"(green), and sand(yellow)
won't mix up because the "media" below it is to small for it to pass through even with the air bubbles going through it. Opinions?

I was thinking of putting a strip of cloth or something over the intake from the mech filter(red, green, yellow thing) to the Biotower (blue thing) just to make sure I don't end up with any sand in there though.

How effective do you think this would be? The main purpose of the sand is to be a fine filter/polisher so it might be really required. I was thinking of making this out of 4" PVC or something with a greater diameter if I can find it.

So yeah, opinions, recommendations, advise would all be appreciated!

By the way here is the link if anyone is interested, http://www.koiphen.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36550&page=2 .

Very interesting. But you think the air bubble would pass through the sand? and what if the sand gets clogged over time?

great idea !! practical i don't know,, the sand will need to be cleaned that is the purpose of the air line, the air at the time of the cleaning it is turned on, this dislodges all the debris that is trapped, so one more outlet is used to purge the sediment while blocking the outlet to your trickel tower,, this system works with one pump from your 40 thru the S&G filter and back to the tank by gravity
