I have a youngish (I've had him for about 8 months since 2") Striped Raphael Catfish who is around 4.5" currently. I love this little bugger even though we never saw him until his hideyhole disappeared and he has to hide under the plants now. Raphaels are shy, nocturnal, and are also known as "croaking catfish". I didn't believe the hype so imagine my surprise the second or third time he was out of the water rasping his little fins- I about had a heart attack.

With getting a large tank, we would love to have a pleco because we like the way they look and the purpose they help to serve. My worry is that even though the pleco will eventually be somewhere around 12" or more, and the Raphael only 7" or so at best, the Raphael is a predator. I fully anticipate losing some guppies, platys, or whatever to the Raphael (and I have a sneaking suspicion he's behind the latest guppy mangling), but what about the pleco? Since most that are sold are around 4", will it be in any danger from a full grown Raphael? And even when they are both full sized, I don't think that the pleco is a particularly aggressive fish- will the Raphael bully it?

Some things I was mulling over, I'd appreciate your thoughts/experiences.

They will be fine together. I have kept a raphael with plecos in the past without ever having any problems. Plecos can be put with almost anything, I have even seen them in piranha tanks a few times before, so a raphael wouldn't pose any kind of threat against a pleco.

I don't think my Raph has caused any damage to other fish in my tank.
At first I thought all the guppies would go (which I could cope with), but I even still get some little guppies and swordtails survive.

I think that after plecos get a decent size they quit serving the purpose most people by them for, algae control. The bigger they get, the less algae they want. Then they become constant suppliers of long poop strings that wrap around every thing in the tank. Raphaels reach a good size and appear to create a lot less waste.

just FYI Plecos can be pretty aggressive, some species anyway. Not that it would pose a threat to the Raph or anything.

dont let them fight.
DONT MAKE THEM FIGHT!

what?? I don't even know how one would go about making fish fight... nor why one would want to.

I have a common pleco and a striped raphael right now and they could care less about each other. The raphael just chills under his driftwood and the pleco does the same on his piece of driftwood. They are both in my 125 piranha tank and havent been touched yet by the piranhas (been about 7 months) so I'm hoping it will stay that way! Pretty funny to see a little raphael swim right by a shoal of 6 6-8 inch piranhas like they weren't even there! ha Although I am considering finding him a good home before anything happens to him.
