Hi,

I'm located on the north shore of Long Island. I used to fish as a young kid and have caught bluefish and stripers off the beach before. However it was mostly one of my uncles hooking one and then handing me the pole. I never bothered to pay attention to the set up or technique. Now that I am a new dad I would like to get back into fishing and eventually go with my daughter as she gets older. My questions are this....

I need a rod and reel that can handle shore casting but not cost a fortune. What would you recommend?
Techniques and tips?
I also may have access to a boat this year. What would you recommend equipment-wise for fishing for stripers off a boat?

Thanks,

Matt

From what I know stripers like shiny things and you can buy actual striper designated lures online. As for a rod there are endless possibilities and im not sure what you price range is? Are you talking $50 or $200? If you really want to start a small striper setup id say to start watching a lot of videos online and just doing a lot of research. In total you could probably get a good setup going including tackle for around $150 with a nice rod and good tackle. Start doing some research and see whag you like and go for that. Good luck!

Price range will definitely help as will a trip to your local bait shop. Research as much as possible. Typically you can get surf combos at a very affordable price, you don't need to spend a ton to be able to catch a few fish and build memories with your daughter. Ugly Stik Shakespeare surf combos can run as cheap as 45-60 bucks and will handle most of what you will hook in to. More importantly than your rod you will want to look in to reading the surf for good spots. Unfortunately casting blind in to the ocean isn't typically going to catch you much. You have to learn to read the surf to know what's going on under the water and learn which of these areas hold fish. Ask around to see how much weight it typically will take to hold to the bottom in your area during which time of the year as it will vary. I would start with a 2 hook bottom rig and build your way up. Best of luck to you!

Thank you for the responses.

I guess I'll narrow it down a little

Here is what I need:

a rod and reel setup that is under 200

It needs to be versatile: stripers, bluefish, and converted for fluke etc.

it also needs to come apart so I can fit it in the car

Suggestions?

Thanks again,
Matt

Just go to your local basspro shop and pickup a rod and reel combo for ~$50-100. Stripers are easy to catch. If your state allows it, I would get a second rod and the proper stamp/license. I like to use one baited with anchovy or sardine (texas rigged) and the other actively casting with a lure or also baited depending on the action or how intoxicated I am. :D

spinning or casting? You generally want a longer rod for casting from shore(around 10ft range) and something slightly shorter for boat use(7-8ft). If spinning, I like this reel http://www.basspro.com/Pflueger-President-6900-Series-Spinning-Reels/product/10213341/, the largest size would work best for stripers($60). The st croix truimph surf series are some high quality yet inexpensive($100) surf rods...unfortunately I can't find them on basspro.com although you may be able to find some on ebay or the like. These rods are also made by st croix and work great but are more expensive. http://www.basspro.com/St-Croix-Mojo-Surf-Spinning-Rods/product/10204574/ Regardless of what you decide, you'll want a reel that can hold up to 20 lb line and a rod in the 8-10 ft range rated for between 10-25 lb line and from 1 up to 4 to 6 oz lure weight. I use that combo above with 15 lb line in the hudson river and catch stripers up to 30 lbs every season and also hooked a few sturgeon in the 20-40 lb class as well.

If you're up for a little casting practice, the shimano cardiff 401 series are great reels for the money. I can cast a mile with them and they can take some serious abuse.
