i am going to strip down a 135g i recently purchased and reseal. i was wondering when removing the old silicone do you dig into the seam or cut perpendicular so you just remove whats covering the joint.

needed to know what prefered pattern is used for placing (i.e. botton then sides etc.)

i know yall hear this alot but is 100% silicone in caulking gun bulk ok. it doesn't say anything about mold or mildew resistants but does say not for use in aquariums. if this is ok how thick of a bead do you run

thanks in advance for you patience :grinno:

Both of these greatly helped me reseal mine:

I think they answer all your questions as well. Although I'll try and recap for your specific questions. Yeah don't dig into the seam between the glass just reseal the 'bead'. I started from the bottom (mostly since I didn't want to practice on the visible portion, but I think that's the recommended starting point anyway.

I used GE (type I), as recommended by both articles, there's also some site (I've heard that it's manufactured by the same plant that the 'aquarium safe' tube is - just a different packaging - although don't quote me, as I can't remember the site for that).

As for thickness, I taped the joint to the thickness I wanted the silicone to show on the glass, then put in a more than enough bead to cover, and pressed the bead in, wiping up all the excess as I went. I probably removed as much as I put on, but I errored on the side of having enough the first time, since the tubs of silicone are cheap ($3 or something like that).

rats ... I saw the thread called stripping and figured one of our female members was doing a How to on it :grinyes:

I agree with Edtiou.. read those posts and the type of sillycon to use would be GE (Type 1)

Keep a photo log of what your doing and show us all here as we're always interested to see what others are doing ... you might actualy hear some advice on something you didn't know or realize about your project as well... the people on here are pretty good with noticing the little things that you might have missed

thanks for the input guys. i checked out those sites and put me at ease, especially about the GE type 1. anyways i hope to begin "stripping" :) this week. i will keep a picture log and when i get a chance i'll post updates here. thanks again
