Strong smelling resin plant?

I just bought a few fake plants at the LFS. One of the them looks like its quite old based on the packaging. I noticed it smells very strongly, after rinsing it is still noticeable. Should i avoid using this, will it leech anything into the water?

Any plastic that has a strong odor is outgassing, maybe phenols or aldahydes, both highly toxic, don't use them.
