Hello all,
I recently purchased a silver arowana. The pet store i bought it from said they were feeding them frozen bloodworms. My arowana is currently 4 inches, but a very picky eater (what arowana isnt, right?). I didnt know aro's were so picky even when young. Anyway, i bought Hikari sticks and i know its probably the healthiest food because it has all the proper nutrients for a well balanced diet. My aro will NOT eat the sticks. I even tried the 24 hour starving method, but its still very stubborn (only eating 1/3 of the stick, I break it up). Bottom line, i gave up and went back to the bloodworms, which it absolutely loves. I understand the bloodworms arent exactly protein rich, so i was wondering if there is an alternative to the food sticks that provides proper protein and nutrients, as well as more favorable. Thanks for the help!

id try crickets, and once hes eatign them try putting the hikari sticks in at the same time you put in crikets or bloodworms, that might get him more interested in the sticks. its worked for me a few times. good luck!

shrimp...crickets....mealworms.....quarantined feeders(just to get him to eat)

young arows need live food, especially under 7 inch size. just fatten them up, and when the get older/bigger you can train them to eat food sticks. GL

agreed wait until there bigger

thanks for the help, everyone. I'll try the live food suggestion for now, hopefully he'll be less stubborn when he gets older....

Young arowana DO NOT need live food. Matter of fact this is the worst thing you can do for the health of your arowana.

My suggestion, continue feeding frozen blood worms starving an arowana this size is a bad idea. Go out an buy some freezed dryed bloodworms, freeze dryed krill/shrimp, and some small soft pellets.

Feed 3 to 4 times, but small portions. Offer the other foods with the frozen blood worms. The blood worms will trigger the eating and should be gradually reduced. Within a few days the other foos will be taken. These foods I have suggested are floating and should be removed from the tank after a few minutes if they are not eaten.

After you get it eating the other foods, try some live baby crickets that have been fed shaved carrots. You aro will love them, but only feed crickets once a week to keep it from getting spoiled.
