Does anyone know if a stud finder will work on a carpeted floor? I am getting another tank soon for my apartment, and would like to know which way the beams go. It will be at least 125g, possibly 180, depending how the beams are laid out. Thanks
A stud finder won't work on carpet because of the airspace between the fibers. You can rent a metal detector (at most tool rentals). The metal detector will locate the fasteners and from that you can figure out their direction and placement.
You can also lift the carpet at a corner of the room and determine their direction and spacing from the subfloor.
