I bought my Heros Notatus and Heros Rotkiel from one of my LFS, they came in as trade ins. This particular store deals in mostly saltwater and african cichlids so they were just labeled as "Severums" but being in the market for a few sevs it was easy to tell what kind they were.

The Rotkiel was about 4" and the Notatus around 3". I've had them in my 150g for around 6-7 months now, no growth from either and their coloration hasn't improved at all. For coloration they both have their black bars, the Rotkiel has a little bit of red around the face and the Notatus has his spots...neither are showing any real color.

I am feeding a variety of things, for pellets I am feeding both NLS and Hikari, they also get Spirulina flake and they carry around the Spirulina wafers like a dog does a bone. For treats they get seaweed, frozen blood worms and frozen brine shrimp.

The tank they are in is a 150g, nitrates never get above 20ppm, they aren't bullied and the Rotkiel is #2 in the tank in terms of top fish. All the other fish in the tank have grown in the month I have had them in there (except for the saums, I mean they have grown but man are they sloooow growers).

So I'm guessing that the tank they came from wasn't kept in the best conditions, my question is will these two ever show their beautiful colors? Is there some type of special diet I could feed them to bring them out better?

Sorry for the double post, I'm unable to edit my original post.

Because I'm trying to create more of a show tank for my 150g, I was thinking of putting these two in a 55g. If they do manage to grow or color up some I could always put them back in the 55g. I did create a new thread about this because I would be transferring other tankmates as well.

Other thread is here.

Here's a pic of the Rotkiel, s/he has been the same color and size since the day I got him/her. What do you guys think? Stunted or just going through an extremely slow growth phase?

Maybe just slow? I think he's a cute little fish either way.

Yeah Sevs are one of my favorite fish. They get big, but not too big, they're not overly aggressive and if not stunted they can show some really nice colors.

So even if these two are stunted - which I believe they are - I'm still going to keep them around, give em a good home.

I know the way you tell is discus are stunted is their eye size in comparison to their body. Me, I can't judge size at all, but maybe that rule works for severums too?

It looks fine to me, like any other adult severum. Not deformed or anything... maybe just growing really slow, and a little dark due to the substrate.
