Helllllllllo fellow keepers.
I've got issues. (duh.read my post history. that'll explain all you need to know)
Every once in a while, I cruise around facebook market place, craigslist, etc. Looking for abused fish. (kept in too small of a tank, lacking water changes, etc) This gets me into trouble. I have tanks. but I really don't. Two weeks ago I took in a goldfish that had huge chunks missing, and she's back to perfectly normal now(also with no forever tank at my place) . So I'm riding the success train. So last night, i see a 15 or so inch alligator gar IN A 33 GALLON TANK. I ask lady how big the tank is, and I'm very polite because we all know people get so touchy. she responds with "100 gallons". Her pictures are taken with a potato, but its very clearly NOT 100 gallons. 55 AT BEST. I'm thinking 33. Im like look man, you're gonna kill that fish, and she responds with.... wait for it.... "it won't kill him. he's been in there for years." YEARS. YEARS?? HOW MANY YEARS. that fish should be well over 2-3 feet. (maybe. I'm not a gar expert but this fish is pretty old). She tells me the pet store she got it from said he was abused. and I'm like gr8. you "rescued him" to continue abusing him. She's a real winner, can you tell? I tell her my degree in marine biology begs to differ on the "it won't kill him" part. (PS i don't have a degree in anything but its pretty clear she doesn't either. WHOOOOOPS. not sorry).
Moving along. I'm like listen you're asking a ridiculous amount for a fish thats probably on deaths door step. Give me the fish. I have a 120 gallon pond it can go in for now. (until it can find somebody that can actually house the damn thing)
This is where my issue comes in. She's giving him to me. (for 150 dollars dude, like this is ridiculous but whatever. saving fish is how i insure I'm not going to hell for all the other terrible things i do on the daily)
But again. 120 gallon pond. thats it. thats the biggest I've got. Its outdoors, gars jump. sure yeah I can (and will) put something over it. But I'm not equipped to handle this fish long term and i refuse to put him in a third house that won't give him what he needs. absolutely refuse. I've got to get him out of there but I can't risk him being in another house that can't house him. which is why i don't wanna take him to my LFS. heres whats up- I have a predatory tank. I have my Arowana in it. (Sarah Pickle Lemon)
Ive got silver dollars, a giant (but teeny tiny right now) gourami, and like a random rainbow fish in there. Its only 125 gallons, Im pushing it with the stock I have now. like really pushing it. She's going to need a bigger tank. and soon (I know all this, don't yell at me. she's only like 9 inches right now she's fine, for now. I know, i got it, i would never put her in danger.) Read that last part carefully. I would never put her in danger. I cannot, and will not, ever risk anything happening to Sarah. Not an option. She's got a great team in her tank right now. everybody gets along. we're all happy, its great. A gar isn't going to work in that tank and is gonna tear that tank apart and I'm not willing to risk it. Besides. Alligator gar. If that fish grows anywhere near what it should be, I'm going to need a minimum of a swimming pool. I don't have space for another monster tank. I need somebody in north Florida/south GA/Jacksonville to come get this fish, some body thats well equipped to handle it. I don't think he's going to grow too much more. But I can't risk it. Im picking him up friday night. Im asking 70$ for him but its negotiable. I wanna make back half of what I paid and the other half is because I want to see him go to a good home. What I've got for him will work for a little bit, but not for long. Please please please ask your friends, or whomever. You can email me (carly1019@me.com) or message me here. Im sorry for the novel. Below are the terrible pics she has posted. If i remember i will update the pics when I get him friday. Thanks always guys, You're the best.

Ouch, if he really is several years old then he is very stunted. I don't know much about gars but if he's as stunted as you say then I'd say he'd get 2 foot max if that. Again, don't quote me.
Anyway, if you're able to ship the fish then I think that there are people in here that would be willing or even looking for one of him.

I don't even know how you'd begin to ship a fish this large. I know it can be done but I don't know anybody who'd be willing to pay 70$ plus shipping for a stunted fish.

I like to think of stunted fish similar to short body fish.
Both don't grow to their full size and both can be kept in a smaller tank then a normal fish.

I do not encourage purposely stunting fish but if a fish is already stunted then it can't be undone and you might as well treat it like short body fish in my opinion.

People love short body monster fish. How many people can care for a normal red tail catfish? Now how many people can take care of a shortbody red tail catfish? The number goes up for the short body.

My point is, there's most likely someone that just loves alligator gars but doesn't have a tank big enough for them but has a tank big enough for a shortbody or stunted one. That's the person that will be willing to pay the $70 and shipping to get their dream fish.

The best part about getting stunted fish is that it takes all of the moral issues out of it because you didn't stunt it, you didn't cause it to be stunted, and you get to give it a much better life then it had and would have had.

Well the good news is thats a Florida gar not an alligator. A healthy one usually doesn't get much bigger than 24in in a tank. I think your best bet is to just keep it in your 125 plenty of people have kept Florida's long term in them it being stunted already it should do even better. Also a healthy 15in florida gar is only worth about $30 retail so you might have trouble if you do decide to sell it.

Ouvh, you got ripped off.

Wait, so did you buy the fish already or not?
If you already bought him, I'm pretty sure you can't haggle with the seller over the price after buying him :p.
