I picked up a 55g from Petco last night and promptly took it home and drilled it for two 1.5" bulkheads. 2 x 1.5" is a little excessive for a 55 in my opinion but I already had the bulkheads for my 110g that sprang a leak before I could drilled it.

I then started messing with my 35g hex that will be replaced by the 55g. While messing with it I had issues with the DIY overflow pipe and got mad. So I lowered the water to about the half way mark, drilled the thing, put a bulkhead in and plumbed it to my sump then filled it back up. The only issue was the glass particles making the water a little hazy but my trusty huge DE filter cleared that up in less than 5 minutes.

I am not recommending drilling filled tanks and think it is a pretty stupid thing to do... but It worked for me.

Were there fish in the tank? If so I wouldn't have taken that risk at all....them inhaling the particles or just the particles being in my water period.

You should have applied some duct tape on the inside first. It catches all the glass bits nicely. :)
