I am in the midst of setting up my sump, but i don't have an emergency drain. I don't even know what one is? From what i can understand, an emergency drain is for when/if the main overflow stops/blocks the main tank doesn't overflow due to the pump not stopping. Am i correct? If this is correct, in the absense of an emergency drain the pump will blow. Correct? Or way off the mark?

My second question is, do i need one?
If my analysis is correct, my tank will not overflow because the sump consists of overflows which will stop the flow of water - meaning the sump cannot be emptied. The pump will blow in this case. Not ideal - but cheaper than fitting an emergency drain.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

An emergency drain is what you think it is. You can set up an extra overflow that is a bit higher than your normal overflow level, it must be primed and ready to take over if your primary overflow get plugged, or loses siphon.
An extra overflow is good insurance , and less expensive than a extra pump, it also saves your floor, and maybe your fish and heaters. Not a frivolous expense.

My overflows are in a central box and are in the base of the tank. I have a 40mm outlet (to the sump) and a 25mm return. I am really curious as to what could block a 40mm drain - especially as the water is drawn from the surface - where the debris is minimal. Plus, i have strainers for the overflow box.

I know its a case of if i dont have it, it's only me who is to blame in the case of an 'accident'. But how many people have ever needed an emergency drain and why?

Mine have been blocked by plants, live plecos, dead fish, all kinds of stuff. My drain pipes are 1 to one and one quarter inch. But if you feel secure......

Okay, thanks. I am unsure as to fit one or not now. I will have to give it somw serious thought. Thanks for your assistance nonetheless. :)
