I have a 450 litre or 100 gallan (Irish size) tank :grinno:!

When doing w/c's i would use a syphon to gravel clean the entire bottom of the tank, taking out roughly 50% of the tanks water?! From the night before i have a container that holds roughly 200 litres, i heat and dechlorinate this water over night before introducing it back into the tank while doing the w/c!

First question, is it possible to use your heated tap at your sink while doing a w/c? I heard it sits to long in the copper pipes and thus is full of harmful metals? Dont know whether or not this is true?

Second question, is there an easier or quicker way to do w/c's in Ireland on a tank this size? How would you get the tempature exactly right going back into the tank?

Thanks for any replies, its stupid because ive been doing it this way for ages haha!!!

Not a stupid question imo mate

I use warm water straight from the tap, adding dechlor is meant to get rid off all the copper, metals etc. I let water run through the hosepipe before entering it into the tank, so that it is 'better, cleaner' water. For temperature I use my hand to compare water in the tank and that coming out of the hosepipe. Some ppl use straight cold water and havent come across any problems. I keep clown loaches though and any big changes in temperature can result in ick. HTH.

From my understanding this is actually one of the best ways to prepare water for a waterchange.

With a python or straight from the faucet is wrought with problems you'll have to fix and monitor consistently, it's just physically easier heh. Well maybe not that much harder just a small hassle getting water just right.

Thanks for the quick replies guys!

So when the water is going back in the chlorine wont harm the fish in the short term your basically telling me? That seriously makes things alot easier ha, thanks for the heads up!!!

I used to boil water in pots and kettles, but honestly it takes too long for a 150 gallon tank. In terms of adding dechlor, I add the correct amount of dechlor to a bucket filled with water and mix it in, then I add this bucket of water to the tank. Give it about 15-20 mins to mix in and then turn the hose on. This way the issue of chlorine in the water should be minimal.

Or you could do a drip system. Just thowing that one out there.

Just wanted to state were i was from that was all, but i get it did sound a bit stupid ha?!

Is a Python water change system available in your area?

If it is just let your tap water run a bit to clear the lines of any standing water and use a thermometer to adjust the temperature then add

Treat the whole tank volume not just the amount you're changing. ie if you have a 200 L tank but only changing 50 L treat for 200 L. This stuff goes a long way so is fairly inexpensive.

This is the easiest way to do a water change.
