I live like 40 mins for the Gulf of Mexico. Can i go shovel some sand, rinse it, and throw it in my fish tank?

It's ok with me, but you really should go ask your mother.

...stupid enough?

Yes, you can just rinse it and it will be fine. The difference in osmotic presure from the salt to fresh water will kill any nasties that you may pick up. There has been red tide in the lower half of Fl for the last several years. I don't know the current status, but if that is where you will be getting the sand you may want to contact Dr. Joe. He stays current on it.

You live in florida. Pool filter sand will be incredibly easy to find, plus really cheap. It for sure won't kill your fish either.

BTW, I don't recommend throwing sand, you'll make a big mess.
