this is a good example of why dams need to be removed. The locals ones here in MI are not even being used to harness electricity any more they just control the current speed. I say tear them down, blow them up and maybe if were lucky we didn't destroy all the sturgeon spawning ground up above the dams.

Or we could just use a fish ladder beside the dam. We might need these hydroelectric dams in the near future.

I dont know of any sturgeon that use a fish Ladder we have a ladder and the salmon and steelhead use it but ive never seen a sturgeon or lake trout in it. And as far as I know the DNR hasnt seen any in it either as they have a camera set up in it to watch the salmon and steehead.

Oh, they use them. Seen many sturgeon in the fish ladders. However only certain ones, like the large ladder at Bonneville.. Sturgeon travel the entire length of the Columbia however. It has locks for barge travel all the way to Lewiston. The reason for the Sturgeon ball was not spawning or travel related imo as this was at Bonneville dam which has a lock. The Columbia River Sturgeon regularly travel to the ocean and back.

Dams over there may be used and they may be able to go up them. But the fish ladders here in MI are not made for sturgeon to travel in there for sturgeon have to stay below the dam and there is little natural reproduction. The fish ladder is designed for jumping fish like salmon and steelhead which have to travel up pool to pool jumping over the walls into the next pool.

What type of fish ladder have you seen the sturgeon in? Typically, sturgeon won't use a fish ladder. They may use a fish lift (like an elevator car).
