I was wondering if a sturgeon would be possible in my pond. I live near Chicago (winter can get as low as -20 degree's). Volume wise it's about 1200 gallons. I let it run year round and have a pump of about 4K per hour. Would a sturgen work? would it survive the winter? what happens after 3-4 years? will it eat my plants and fish? or am I pissing in the wind?

I am also Interested in putting sturgeon in my pond. I actually have two ponds that I run, mine and my parents. Mine is 8x13x3foot deep and my parents is 10x16x3. Are these big enough for the sturgeon? Does anyone have any reputable sturgeon breeders to talk with? I have loved sturgeon since I was 10-12, I live in Idaho by the Snake River where the sturgeon can reach 20 feet in length, I know they are not the same species, but the sterlet have the exact look as the ones in the river. Any info would be GREATLY appreciated.

i know theres a few online breeders

the pond shouldnt have straight corners and dont allow blanket weed to grow. firstly they get stuck and secondly most drown as they really need to keep moving like sharks. Secondly make sure you have food that gets down to them as they find it hard feeding from the surface, when they food is down there make sure they are eating it as they get badly affected by slight pollution and most take a long time to start feeding if at all. I would suggest a pond 30'x30'x5' depth dependent on the severity of your winters

Sturgeon would be awesome.

That would be great to raise one to when they get HUGE.

Good luck with yours.

My Uncles got one in his pond, it's about 1.5 ft and he's had it about a year, i'll ask him what he knows. This is in North East England though and it only gets about -5 at the worst.
