Styrofoam and cement 3-D decorations

So I am building a peace for my 150gl aquarium. I hear the the styrofoam and cement backgrounds don't last to long before they start to crumble. I just wanted to know how long they have lasted for anyone else? Because if it's like 6 month or more that's fine I like to switch things up anyway.

2 x options that i have used to good effect.

coat it in clear resin (as in fibreglass) or a clear polyurethane varnish (lacquer)
