I will be setting up my 180 very shortly but, have come across this problem. The 180 is a glass tank with the black trim on both top and, bottom of the tank and, it will be on a wooden stand. My questions is do I put styrofoam under it, or just schim it level and, call it a day.

Here is a picture of the stand

I know search on mfk but, this thread has confused me is putting styrofoam not necessary just for steel stands or wooden too.

No styrofoam. You don't need it. Put shims under the stand if necessary to get it level.

Cant hurt right? I've always used Styrofoam

Well, depending on the situation and if there is a warranty involved, yes it can hurt. I'm sure there's a reason that manufacturers will void your warranty if you use foam under a floating glass tank.

You really wouldn't have to unless there's gaps in the stand top, like dips almost, the styro would just help even it, but if it's perfectly level then you won't need it.

I just feel it helps protect the wood, and add a little cushioning

thanks all for the help in clearing it up.

Well, I will offer my 2 cents. After having my 300g pop a crack right across the middle and my other 300g which has styro under it has never had an issue. I will put styro under any tank that is 5 ft in length or longer as the stryo acts like good insurance.

I have styro under my 180sw which is on a wood stand.

edit:my 300 is 10 ft long and has black trim on top and bottom
