i am going to get a 224g acrylic aquarium soon. i have noticed that people put a sheet of styrofoam on top of the plywood on their stands. is this necessary?
can the aqaurium sit on top of the plywood or does it need some kind of cushion?

the foam makes up for any imperfections in the stand. If your stand is perfectly smooth and level, you dont need it.

It cant make up for huge differences though

something as small as a grain of gravel between two solid surfaces (tank and stand) can cause a crack. i always use it on anything bigger than 55gal.

its a safe bet and usual hidden by stands. i would definately opt for it if i were you. $5 vs. $500 you do the math.
