I saw once someone put egg crate at the bottom of their tank and then put the sand substrate over it to help protect the bottom from getting shattered if anything heavy ever fell within the tank.

Egg crate isn't a bad idea, but what about using a 1/4" or 1/2" piece of foam or polystyrene or such?

Any thoughts?

Yeah I don't drop heavy things in my tanks.
They're made of glass.

HAHAHAHHA srsly...
a) water and substrate will break the fall by infinite
b) tank can stand a lot of weight
c) remove dangerous objects from vicinity of tank :P
