I know the trickle effect of a wet/dry is optimal because of the available oxygen, but do matrix rocks and sintered glass also work well when fully submerged? Also, if I pack a media bag tight with matrix rocks, should water flow through well, or am I better off using less rocks and spacing them out with some sort of media tray to allow for better water flow?

Thanks, but Im already setup and wondering how I can optomize my filter, and really wondering just about matrix rocks and sintered glass (they are in the compartment below the bioballs, and the bioballs are not submerged, but the sintered glass and the matrix rocks are often submerged depending on the water level). Also, on another tank, I have bags of matrix rocks and I was wondering if Id be better off with less rocks spaced apart to maximize flow, because Im worried the water might just rush around the filter bags (theres room for the water to flow between the bags)

BTW Matrix is sintered glass .....it works both submerged and in a trickle situation.

i have 8L submerged matrx in my sump with plans for another 8 in the summer...

Alright, thanks guys. Just wondering because the way I Have my sump setup, the water trickles through the bioballs and the matrix is submerged. What about matrix rocks in filter bags in a HOB though? In my other tank I took two emperor 400's, and instead of carbon insterts I put in two sheets of poly-fiber and two media bags filled with matrix rocks in each compartment. The rocks are packed tight, and theres a bunch of room for the water to flow around. what do you guys think of that?

go for it... more bio the better...

OK so you didn't read my post on that thread...try these pond planters they work great for placing matrix, ceramic noodles or pond matrix (my favorite) in a sump. Allows for plenty of water movement and easy cleanup..try placing a small water pump in the sump 50 to 90 gph to direct the water flow through the media basket if your worried.
