I <3 MS Paint!

I was going to set it up with bioballs both above and below the water level, but then someone suggested using pumice instead. I'm not so sure because once all the pores clog up with muck it'll lose a lot of its surface area and coud end up doing more harm than good. Other than buying expensive LFS ceramic noodles, what else could I use for the submerged media? I'm going to have some coral rock in there to counter the big pieces of wood in the tank, but obviously don't want to fill it up with that as I'm keeping loaches and SA cichlids.

Suggestions?

i have some submerged media in the bottom drawer of my wet/dry. eheim eheim substrat pro submerged, bio balls in a trickle setup. it doesnt sit all the way on the bottom of the sump tho. it sits up a few inches to let the crud settle in the bottom of the sump, instead of in the media.

get the old standard rubbermaid drawer tower, and get a dish drain rack to hold it up. :D one stop wet/dry shopping on aisle 4

Good idea, I'll put a shelf of some sorts in to keep the media off the bottom. Any suggestions for what to use for the submerged media? The guy at the LFS suggested the ehiem media, I looked at the size of the box and asked if he seriously expected me to spend $800 on media....

the only "muck" that should get to any media after it hits the filter wool would be a buildup of BB since all the chunks are going to get filtered out...

either way though.. when it comes to filling space in a sump.. nothing beats pot scrubbers IMO...

pot scrubbers ftw !

I agree, scrubbies are cheap and have a lot of square footage for the price. I use them in cans and HOB's as well.

I had a quick look at the supermarket and our NZ equivalent of WalMart and couldn't find anything like them. Are they basically like a nylon scrunchy thing kinda like a heavy-duty body scrubber? The only "pot scrubbers" I could find had detergent in them or were made from metal.

ive heard the eheim stuff works well submerged as well, so i picked up a 5L box from ebay. put a little in my fx5 and the rest in the wet/dry drawer #3. drawer #2 is filled with bioballs. drawer #1 is filter floss with a spray bar above.
