just built 55gal conversion and all my scubbies are under water. my bioballs are above the waterline though. how effective will they be submerged? let me find a pic....

As long as you have relatively clean water moving through your media, it will be fine.
Will it be as efficient as a wet/dry, no.
Will it promote and sustain a bacteria colony, yes.

:iagree:

IM THINKING ABOUT LOWERING THE LEVEL OF THE WATER BY PUTTING A 90 DEGREE ELBOW ON THE INTAKE OF THE PUMP. WOULD THAT BE BETTER THAN HAVING THE SUBMERGED SCRUBBIES?

You could lower the water level without the 90* on the pump. You have plenty of water volume to operate. I think it will work fine either way.

well even with the water level down right above the plexi seperators the pump starts to pull in air. i also was in the mind set of using the little bit of heat from the pump operating to help heat the water, while keeping the pump cool. i did alot of small things to this setup to try and make it as maintenance and efficient as possible.

Quiet ones do not put out a lot of heat. You probably won't notice much difference. You are right though. I totally missed the separators for some reason. I would just leave it as is. You should be fine.
