My tank had an external sump but I noticed the metal casing is cracked when I took it apart. I'm not sure if I should re plum for a submersible or just stick to external.

My tank is 300 gallons with 125-150 gallon sump tank. My drain system is wicked good so I can run a strong sump pump.

If an external breaks can it leak in my house? What if the seals fail? I read you have to replace seals on them? Mine came with the tank and replacing the external with a new one is no work but they look very expensive. I'm just scared of water leaks as my tank is in the living room.

Last thing are submerge sumps actually strong enough for filtration? I use one that runs 24/7 as a fail safe. I saw one for 160$ but reviews said they last about 2 years it says 6000gph but I question that since I use a huge one for my drain and refills and it doesn't seem that powerful in comparison to my external.

I think what you're calling a sump is actually the pump, not a sump?

And yeah, submerged pumps can be just as powerful, or more powerful than externals. A lot of submerged pumps can be run externally too if you really want.

And there is a little less risk of leakage. Downside is they tend to heat the water more because all of the waste heat goes into the water where an external will heat up the air around it a bit more instead.

Yeah sorry I meant sump pump.

How often do the external ones break and leak? I read some people say you have to replace their seals?

What submerged pump do you guys recommend?

Occasionally you'll need to replace their seals. But you're talking years.

I had good luck with Laguna pond pumps. Ran my 300L marine tank with a 150L sump for a couple years with no issues on a 6000 LPH Pondjet. Good flow, good price.

When I first started sumps, I used a cheap one from Home Depot of some place like that.
I lasted about a rear, I doubt the "sump pumps" are built for continuous use.
After that Mag Drive pond pumps became my preferred pumps, and each most lasted 12 to 20 years, although I might have replaced an impeller or volute during those stretches when a snail or stone got in and caused wear.
They ran a bit hot, and were noisy.
So I switched to Laguna around 10 years ago, they are quieter, ran less hot, and have done the job

Are those submerged or external sump pumps?
