I have a pump in my 55-gallon tank now that is pretty much perfect for the other tank I am setting up. Would like to get another but can't figure out what the heck this pump is.

It is a submersible utility pump. The label on it is damaged so I can't make out much of it. The brand is "UL". Essentially, this is a mini submersible that pumps a crapload of water. In the 55 it creates almost a river current. Unlike all submersible pumps I see out there, this one has a dedicated tube for an intake instead of the screening around the pump housing you normally see. This allows me to put a cone on there and a large sponge over that for filtration. Probably frowned upon, this works great for my prawn setups.

Can anyone help me figure out what the heck the pump is? It may be quite old. My Dad probably snagged it decades ago when stuff was free or cheap at his last aquarium gig. Like I said, all submersible pumps I see are larger than this one and they have screening around the intake. Makes it tougher to get a sponge filter going...

Thanks in advance.

are you sure the name is ul... I'd think it more likely at this point that you are seeing the pump's UL listing.
need a pic.

Sounds like a mag pump. Picture and it would be identified in seconds.

Thanks for the replies. Wasn't thinking this one through so I didn't get a pic yet. At work now but will post up a pic this evening.

To be continued... :)

edit: Looking quickly online, it is looking very similar to a mag pump. My next issue will be to figure out the gph rating of this thing. Keep your eyes peeled for a post from me later today.

Stupid question while I'm at this... they say mag pumps can be run submerged or in-line. In line mean I could run the intake in the water but the pump out of water? Sorry for my ignorance :( In this scenario, I would run the pump under the tank. That would free up some space.

It's definitely a mag pump. Looks like they can be pretty expensive. I'm going to try to snag a 1000gph pump and make a really nice fat sponge filter for the inlet. That should be plenty for a tank with one or two prawn.

Thanks again for the help everyone! Much appreciated. :)

THAT WAS EASY :D
