i have 180 gal tank, trying to select substrate. i want to have a few low light plants and some driftwood. what are some substrate suggestions for bluegills and crappies?

They're not that picky. If your 'gills decide to nest, a mix of different size gravel would be good for them. Plants prefer sand or very fine gravel, but you can pot them in suitable substrate and fill the rest with whatever you like. Centrarchids are color changers and respond dramatically to substrate and background color; in general dark substrates will bring out their colors and pattern more.

what kind of depth should i use for sand. i have a overflow filtration system.
also is there any diference in sand other than color. like diameter and what does that affect. is there an optimal sand diameter. and what is the best way to keep the sand clean or will the plants just use the waste as food?

thanks noto would it be a good idea to have the tank have gravel sand mixture in part and maybe the other part just sand. or will they all just mix

would it be a good idea to have a power head located in the aquarium for water flow. if so what size would be good and does location matter?
