I'm choosing substrate for my 55g and I'm wondering if using dark substrate will make my clown loaches darker? Any input would be appreciated

Not sure that it would make them darker, that's more of a diet and happiness kinda thing. The darker substrate will help bring out their color a bit more.

I have a few on very light colored sand and they are also very light. When they were on black sand they were a lot darker.

My friend has one on black sand and it's WAY darker than mine.

So yes, I think it would.

They can go light & dark at will, so dont worry too much about how their colors come through on different substrates. As long as its white, black, or tan they will be plenty vibrant. Of course, the tanks lighting makes a huge difference, as well as their nutrition, number of hiding spots & the shoal size... So, I guess my point is get the sand color you like (yes, I'm suggesting sand) & let them surprise you with all the colors they can make.
